How I Got Into Coaching?

In 2007, I started college at the University of Georgia, majoring in journalism and minoring in anthropology. Initially, I wanted to do field work as a writer and researcher. Two years later, I realized that UGA wasn’t my best fit. I transferred to Georgia State University, where I walked on the track and field/cross country team and graduated with a degree in journalism and a minor in speed communications.

When I left school, I was offered a job from my internship program at college at a small PR agency in Atlanta. I worked there for about a year and then left that job to start working as a digital project manager at a marketing agency. And to be fair, while I thought this agency was awesome, I didn’t enjoy working in corporate America. So, I left that job and started my own freelance marketing business, where I mostly designed websites. This was right around the time I started missing sports and fitness.

One day, I walked into an LA Fitness and asked for a job. I started working there, scanning key cards at the front desk while I took my ISSA certification exam. After a few months, I became a personal trainer. I left LA Fitness after a few months and decided to put all my PR and marketing skills into building my own personal training business. For the next 5 years, I worked at a small boutique personal training studio in Atlanta, built up a business of over 30 1:1 clients, helped start a CrossFit gym, and loved life.

In 2016, my friend called me and told me about an opportunity with an “audio-fitness app” in New York City. I had no idea what that was at the time, but I knew the fitness industry was trending more toward the tech side, and I wanted to be a part of it. The job interview worked out. I took out a $10,000 loan, moved to NYC (that money lasted about 5 hours), and helped build this company up from scratch. Three years later, I was a founding trainer of that company, helped raise over 50 million, and grew their membership base to over 200,000 app subscribers.

In 2019, my sound engineer called me to ask if I was okay. I had no idea what she was talking about, and she let me know I was on the “you’ve been fired list,” along with 40+ other people. I was shocked. I had no idea what to do and was told I couldn’t tell anyone I got fired.

So naturally, I posted on social media that I thought it was unfair. I was fired, and I started my own app literally that next day. My brother flew to NYC from DC, and we worked for about 48 hours straight setting up my new app, Run With Meg.

Run with Meg is now Movement & Miles. There’s a lot that happened in between Run With Meg and M/M, but my lawyers won’t let me talk about that :)

Anyway, getting to where I am today was an imperfectly perfect journey. It wasn’t easy, but I love what I do and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thank you for being a part of it!
